Welcome to First Grade in Room 5!
First grade is an exciting time. This year your child will learn how to read, write stories, add, subtract and so much more. I hope to make your child's learning experience an exciting one and instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child's years of schooling.
So much happens in first grade! The year will be full of important transitions. It is extremely important to keep in mind that we all build on small successes. Each child will progress at his/her own rate, acquiring skills as he/she is developmentally read. Maintaining each child's self-esteem and building a secure foundation for future growth will always remain a priority in our first grade. Here are some ways you can help:
Parent/Teacher Relationship
I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, report cards and parent-teacher conferences. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. You can call me at school (707) 542-3671 or send me a note or e-mail me. I am available for conferences regarding your child's progress by appointment on school days. If you are interested in helping in the classroom you must let me know at least a week ahead of time. Please do not just show up to volunteer. I won't be able to stop teaching and plan something for you to do. Also, you must go to the office and check in before coming to the classroom. This is school policy.
Birthdays
If you are interested in having a birthday celebration for your child in school I ask that you inform me in advance. Please send healthy food instead of cupcakes. See me for ideas. Celebrations are held at the end of the day.
Changes in Transportation
Please send a written note if there is a change in transportation for your child. Do not rely on your child to tell me this information, because children often become confused and relay messages incorrectly. If no written note is received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.
Homework Folder
Homework is given each Friday to be returned the following Friday. If your child doesn't return homework, he/she will miss the privilege parties on Friday afternoons (Fun Fridays!)
Snack
Please send a healthy snack with your child each day. Some ideas are crackers and cheese, fruit, an sandwich and/or veggies.
I look forward to teaching your child and working with you to help your child achieve their fullest potential!
Respectfully,
Joan Boyce

- Celebrate your child's success, no matter how small it may seem. This will keep your child enthusiastic about learning and proud of their work!
- Read to and with your child every day. The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom.
